This is a full-time immersion program which gives participants the opportunity to explore several aspects of the print medium and experiment combinations of printmaking techniques.

A new world of image making will open up through creative experiments, as emphasis of this course is not only on the physical methods of the mediums or on the ability to produce multiples or limited edition prints. Emphasis is placed on the experimental and visual possibilities that printmaking offers, allowing participants to develop their intellectual, creative and critical abilities through a variety of processes used in combination or on their own.

For a small supplement of Eur 450, non-painting friends or partners are welcome to join this holiday retreat. Keen walkers or photographers will find lots to see and do: the area is famous for its medieval villages and incredible churches as well as nature trails for different levels of expertise. It is recommended that non-painters rent a car as Dedalo is situated in a rural location with public transport stopping by only twice daily.

Accommodation

Accommodation is in comfortable bedrooms, some with private bathroom. Open access to lounge with TV, DVD, outdoor gardens.

 


Programme:

Day 1 Guests are expected to arrive after 2 pm. Evening: welcome dinner.

Day 2: The art of Monoprints and Monotypes: A first and exciting introduction to the art of printmaking. Students can expect to create numerous prints during this day as we will cover a range of techniques using oil based and waterbased inks and colors. We will explore direct tracing, additive and subtractive methods.

Day 3: Zinc plate etching: you will learn how to prepare a plate, bevel the edge, degrease, apply hard ground, draw and finally etch and print the plate.

Day 4: Collagraph: We will collage different materials onto a printing plate which will be ready to print on the following day. later in the morning we will aquatint the zinc plate previously etched; this will enable us to create various different effects as well as tone variations.
In the afternoon we shall explore soft ground etching used to add a variety of textures with textural material, eg: leaves, foil, fabric, feathers, netting.
Visit to the abbey of San Clemente before lunchtime.

Day 5: Printing the collagraph: The morning will be spent printing our collagraph using colored inks.
In the afternoon excursion to Serramonacesca or Rocca Calascio

Day 6: Sugarlift. Participants will explore the qualities of Sugar Lift, which is a way of creating brush strokes etched into the plate and printed as a black or a dark tone. Spit Biting or painting directly on to the surface of a plate to create a mark much like that of a water colour, will also be covered.
In the afternoon we shall work on a simple linocut and do some paper embossing.
Students are also encouraged to further explore what they learned by creating works with a combination of techniques incorporating chine collé and pochoir.

Day 7: The day will be spent working on a reduction print which involves cutting away portions of the block after printing each color thus creating a multi color print using one block only. if time allows we will learn how to cut a mat.

Day 8: Departure after breakfast

Beginners are welcome to join this course which is mostly designed for seasoned artists and teachers wishing to learn additional techniques to bring to their practice.
