Festivals in Abruzzo

Abruzzo has a long varied history which resulted in many processions, fairs and carnivals depicting various historical events. Nearly all the towns and villages participate and it is a great way to taste local wine and food.

JANUARY
  • Picciano : Traditional Befana Festival
  • Rivisondoli : Living Nativity Scene: hundreds of costumed figures re-enact the arrival of the Three Kings at the manger
  • Fara Filiorum Petri : Farchie Festival: giant torches illuminate this festival for St. Anthony

  • Snake Handlers' Procession in Cocullo
    Every year on the first Thursday in May, thousands of people go to this little town to see the faithful bring offerings of snakes to their patron saint, Dominic. The slithering treasures are all very carefully entwined upon the statue before it is taken in solemn procession through the village, accompanied by the band. All who follow are rewarded by fireworks, followed by a banquet in the streets. - not to be missed
  • Rocca di Mezzo : Daffodil Festival: folklore dances, presentations and a parade of flowery floats to celebrate the arrival of spring
  • Rocca di Mezzo Plowing Festival: re-enactment of a 17th-century custom, culminating with a race to plow the most perfect furrow
  • Bucchianico : Flower Festival: re-enactment of a 13th-century military stratagem that saved the town from destruction, with costumed parades, flower-bedecked carts and exquisite miniature flower floats worn on the local ladies' heads

  • Cappelle Sul Tavo : Palio del Pupo Costumed Races
  • Cepagatti : Historical Parade with Floats, Fireworks and Celebrations
  • Traditional Wedding Ceremony: re-enactment of the unique local wedding customs
  • Popoli : Trout and Shrimp Festival
  • L'Aquila : Pope Celestino's Pardon Ceremonies
  • Celano : Costumed Procession and Fireworks
  • Cappelle Sul tavo : Palio of the Puppets: giant puppets form a procession through the town, then explode in a shower of fireworks
  • Penna S. Andrea - Traditional Dance of Love
  • Aquila: perdonanza Jubilee in Abruzzo
  • Atri: chariots parade
  • Scanno: Bridal Parade
  • Tocco Casauria - Chicken Festival
SEPTEMBER
  • Lanciano : Medieval Pageant and Horse Race
  • Pacentro : Festival of the Madonna of Loreto, with a traditional bare-foot "gypsy race"
OCTOBER
  • Villa Santa Maria : Culinary Festival: world-famous chefs who hail from the region gather for a three-day demonstration of their skills, based on techniques and recipes that date back over centuries
NOVEMBER
  • Scanno : Bonfire Festival: enormous bonfires are lit on the surrounding hillsides to commemorate St. Martin
DECEMBER from December 24th to January 6th is one of the most celebrated in Italy - Everywhere you go you'll find living nativity scenes, which might be comprised of a dozen local citizens around a simple campfire, or hundreds of participants from an entire region, all dressed in colorful traditional costumes and performing in elaborate life-size recreations of the Holy Manger- Don't miss the Living Nativity Scene in Rivisondoli
