Sports in Abruzzo

 

WATERSPORTS

all along the coast there are numerous sailing and windsurfing schools many of which also rent out equipment or sails. Just look around on the beaches. Waterskiing is also available and jet skis can be rented out nearly everywhere

ALPINE SKIING

The  Gran Sasso ,  with the Corno Grande peak (2914 m.), is the highest mountain of all the Appennines. Its height allows skiers to enjoy their favorite sport until late april. Campo Imperatore e Montecristo  are skiing stations located in the Gran Sasso Laga national park. The Velino Sirente regional park hosts the skiing stations of Ovindoli - Monte Magnola e Campo Felice , complete with tracks ranging from easy to extremely difficult.

HORSE RIDING

The area of l’Aquila is the perfect place for equestrian trekking, thanks to its great plains, the birchwoods, the mountain towns and the uncontaminated wilderness. Needless to say, there are many riding centers available, also offering excursions and trips.

CANOEING

Canoeing can be practiced in the waters of the lakes of Scanno ,    Barrea    and Campotosto .    Particularly suitable are also the rivers Tirino ,    Aterno ,   Pescara and Sangro.

FREE CLIMBING

There are 20 different sites in Abruzzo where free climbing can be practiced. Roccamorice , particularly, is one of the best known sites in all of Italy with its 250 pathways, suitable for beginners and experts alike. Other stes are: Pizzoferrato, Pennapiedimonte, Corvara, Arsita, Pietracamela, Monticchio, Prati Di Tivo, Madonna d'Appari, Carpineto della Nora, Pescosansonesco, Monte Aquila , Forca Di Penne , Petrella Liri, Pietrasecca, Lucoli, Capestrano and Civitella del Tronto.  Italian Alpine Club - Section of L'Aquila

CLIMBING The Gran Sasso Mountain range is sure to offer one of the most entertaining experiences for any alpinist. One of its most challenging peaks is the Corno Piccolo (especially its eastern wall). Also worth of mention are the Corno Grande ( 2914 m.), well suited for "classic" alpinism; Pizzo d'Intermesoli , which is sure to pose a good challenge to even the most experienced pratictioners of this sport; and Monte Camicia . For those who like easier peaks, our mountain range offers mount Prena and Sirente and its wonderful panoramas.
TREKKING

For the naturalist and the excursionist there is an ample choice of itineraries and exc ursions. In the area of L'Aquila, in spring, the mountains reveal pathways hidden by the snow
MOUNTAIN BIKING L'Aquila, with its surrounding t hree national and one regional parks , is well suited for Mountain Biking. The numerous dirt tracks and the many itineraries , along with an almost non-existant car traffic, are sure to provide an excellent time for beginners and experts alike, all year around
PARASAILING

There are numerous parasailing schools in Abruzzo.
